Why ‘DeepTech Commercialisation’?

Throughout my career, I've had the incredible opportunity to work with and alongside many amazing startups and highly innovative technology developers. My journey began in the late 1990s as an applications engineer. Over the next 15 years, I transitioned through roles in sales, marketing, and commercial management, ultimately becoming a CEO. For the past decade, I've worked as a consultant, further broadening my startup experiences.

During this time, I've encountered countless experiences. Being honest, there have been many really tough challenges, but this is the reality of startup life and these experiences have given me a first-hand understanding of what works and where the major challenges lie in developing commercially successful technology.

Reflecting on my 25 years in the industry, it's evident that while technology commercialisation and achieving 'product-market fit' is tough for any startup, it is exponentially more difficult for deep-tech startups and those developing solutions based on deep tech. This segment is not only one of the highest-risk areas in the startup world but also the least well-served in terms of support and information.

To address this gap, I created "DeepTech Commercialisation," a focused initiative aimed at meeting the specific needs of deep-tech innovators. As a consultant, I've already been working in this area, but DeepTech Commercialisation is designed to provide more targeted support. Here are my three personal objectives for DeepTech Commercialisation:

  1. Provide Relevant and Visible Support: DeepTech Commercialisation will offer a clear point of support for deep tech businesses, addressing their unique challenges. This includes not only our own expertise but also collating useful third-party resources. I don't pretend to know everything, so bringing together diverse sources of support is crucial.

  2. Follow the Data: While my observations are extensive and valuable, they are inherently anecdotal. I have begun to quantify and extract metrics around the factors that restrict and help deep tech companies go to market and achieve product-market fit. DeepTech Commercialisation will serve as a focused vehicle for this effort, ultimately providing data-driven insights for the benefit of the deep tech community.

  3. Develop Scalable, Templated Approaches: Like all consultancies, our time is not scalable. To reach more people and enable some degree of self-support, I am developing templated approaches. These resources will help more deep-tech startups navigate their commercialisation journeys effectively.

DeepTech Commercialisation is my dedicated effort to bridge the support gap for deep-tech startups, leveraging my extensive experience to help innovators overcome their unique challenges and succeed in the market. Follow us for insights, resources, and strategies tailored to the deep-tech ecosystem.
